As the major sponsor of the National Sunshine Coast Art Prize, at the Caloundra Regional Gallery, Sunshine Coast Council, we are excited to feature and share with you our local Sunshine Coast finalists.
Today we speak with local artist and finalist, Amanda Shadforth from Alexandra Headland.
We encourage everyone to view the exhibition at the Caloundra Art Gallery (until October 10th) and vote for their favourite piece in the People’s Choice category. You can vote for the $2500 People’s Choice Award until September 19, at the gallery or online here: https://bit.ly/3ne4mpk
1. What does it mean to you to be recognised as a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2021?
Earlier in my career as an artist I completed several public murals, many still located around the Sunshine Coast, for our local council and community. I also owned my own art gallery in Cotton Tree. Taking a hiatus from the industry for several years, to focus on creative pursuits within the fast-growing digital space (@amandashadforth), I couldn’t think of a more prestigious honour to re-enter the art space as a 2021 Sunshine Coast Art Prize entrant. I feel being a part of this incredible show is a wonderful way to re-ignite my passion and continue my career as an artist.
2. What journey has brought you here to the Sunshine Coast?
I feel lucky to have lived on the Sunshine Coast my entire life. My family have called the Sunshine Coast home for over 50 years, and I feel privileged to have watched this beautiful area grow, and call it my home.
My career over the last 10 years, as a Creative Director in the fashion, lifestyle and travel industry, has taken me around the globe, yet I always look forward to coming home. There really is no place that I'd rather live.
3. What are your dreams and ambitions as an artist?
Art is my personal expression where I feel as though anything is possible. I love to experiment with different mediums, and I equally enjoy having my work stir emotions in those that view it, whether it be happiness, curiosity, joy or even nostalgia. My goal is to create a body of work over my lifetime that leaves a legacy of inspiring and engaging others.

Artist Statement
Balance has always been important to me, whether it be in the metaphysical sense or even the literal, I find that seeking out balance is a challenge that I spend much time contemplating.
During 2020 I was able to stand back from my role as a Creative Director working in the fashion industry and spend more time with my family. This also allowed me to reconnect with my love of painting.
This artwork for me is a pun reflective upon the changes that I face as I contemplate the future of my creative work. I’ve often enjoyed photographing campaign images for brands where I arrange objects in interesting ways but painting a still life with found objects from nature and my home was a fulfilling exercise that inspired me in new ways. There is something innately satisfying about creating for ones own purpose and hoping this brings others joy.
